MAIN EVENT PREVIEW

Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda – for Stevenson’s WBC lightweight championship

  • Stevenson (22-0, 11 KO) is one of the most skilled and physically talented fighters on Earth. His speed and defensive instincts are unmatched. Zepeda (33-0, 27 KO) could represent a stylistic challenge for the champion because of his pace and power. This is expected to be one of Stevenson’s toughest fights and that’s reason enough for any boxing fan to be interested.
  • After the weigh-ins and at the pre-fight presser on Friday, Stevenson was asked how he was feeling ahead of the fight. ““Honestly, I’m prepared and ready,” Stevenson said. “I try not to think about the future, I try to remain in the present. Right now, we’re at the weigh-ins. Mentally, I’m ready, but I’m not worried about tomorrow. I’m having fun.” A more hostile and focused Zepeda offered this response to a similar question: ”“I had a finger lifted up to me, that’s disrespect,” Zepeda said. “Disrespect to my family. We’re here and we’re ready.”
  • Stevenson’s keys to victory will be to keep it classy. By that I mean, he needs to resist the urge to engage in a firefight with Zepeda. Stevenson is being pressured to deliver a memorable scrap, but entering into too many exchanges will give Zepeda his only chance to win the fight. If Stevenson moves, keeps it clean and outboxes Zepeda, he could win a pretty easy decision. If he decides to sit down on more punches, he could still win and should be favored, but he will be taking what I’d consider to be an unnecessary risk. For Zepeda, his game plan is the exact opposite. He needs to make this fight as ugly and nasty as possible. He needs to rough Stevenson up on the inside. Apply relentless pressure. Maintain his signature work rate and look to catch the champion with something that puts doubt in his mind. Ideally, he’d wear Stevenson down and win by late stoppage or by a close decision as he takes the later rounds.
