Israel bombed the entrance of the Syrian military’s headquarters in Damascus on Wednesday, marking a significant escalation of its campaign of strikes in the country.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it was also carrying out strikes in southern Syria, where violence between Druze militants and Bedouin tribes has flared in recent days. The sectarian clashes have left dozens dead and drawn in Syria’s state security forces.

Israel’s strike on the defence ministry, which is located on one of the main squares in central Damascus, came after Israeli defence minister Israel Katz demanded that the Syrian government withdraw its forces from southern Syria.

Israel, which has claimed to be acting in defence of the Druze, has repeatedly intervened in Syria since the collapse of the regime of Bashar al-Assad last year.
