When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for wide receiver DK Metcalf, the goal was to give the Steelers a second elite receiver to add some punch to the passing game. Pittsburgh has a very young and inexperienced group of receivers but Metcalf and George Pickens were going to put them over the top.
Unfortunately, Pickens was subsequently traded to the Dallas Cowboys, and with that, Metcalf is now not only the team’s No. 1 wide receiver but the most experienced skill-position player on the roster. This puts his leadership style in the spotlight and it’s something he talked about during minicamp on Wednesday.
“I’m more of a lead by example type of guy,” Metcalf said. “I’m not a big rah guy or you know walk up and say something to you on the spot.”
Unfortunately, the Steelers offense needs more rah guys, not less. Even new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers isn’t likely to be that vocal leader in the twilight of his career, the way Ben Roethlisberger was and if not either of them, there’s no one on offense to light a fire under this underwhelming offense.
