Today’s Wordle answer (game #1458) is… PETTY.
I’m sorry to say that I am a PETTY person, but generally only when it comes to language.
For instance, I feel the need to correct people when they say “less” but mean “fewer”, or if they misuse “literally”. And I’m not talking about in my job, where these kind of things matter (to an extent), but rather in day-to-day life, where they don’t.
Still, there are worse things to be petty about. Right? Right? Please reassure me.
You don’t need to reassure me about my Wordle performance today, at least, because I’m content with my four. Sure, it was higher than today’s average of 3.8, but I had a terrible start. Plus, WordleBot ended up with a four too, despite a better first guess, so I can’t have done too much wrong.
I’m a little surprised PETTY has an average of below four, because it contains a repeated T and also has a similarly spelled alternative in the form of JETTY. Maybe the score will go up as the day goes on.
I had high hopes for SCENE as an opening word, despite the repeated E. That’s because S, C and N are all ultra-common letters and good ones to rule in/out early on, while E is the most likely letter to appear twice, so it wouldn’t hurt to confirm that it was or wasn’t repeated right at the start.
Indeed, that’s what happened; the first E turned yellow but the second went gray. This immediately narrowed down the places where the E could go next, too; I was looking at E—-, -E—- or —E-.
The latter seemed most likely, because that’s where it usually appears if not at the end. Plus, I hadn’t yet played R, so an ER word was a possibility. I went with LATER and it worked brilliantly, giving me a green T in the middle and cutting the options to just six.
I found four, as it happened: FETID, DETOX, PETTY and JETTY, missing PETIT and GETUP. Both of those words seem very unlikely to be answers, whatever the ‘Bot says, so I’m not beating myself up about it.
DEPTH was guaranteed to give me the answer among the four I’d found, so I played it next and it duly came up trumps by turning the E green and bringing a P into proceedings. PETTY was the only word that still fit, so I was able to score my four.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1457)
In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1457, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

Q is one of the least likely letters to start a Wordle answer – but then again, it’s also one of the least common letters in the game anywhere!

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1457) was… QUAIL.
There are only 29 words among the 2,309 original solutions that include a Q, so today’s appearance is way ahead of schedule given that we had another one only just over two weeks ago.
Then again, probability doesn’t work predictably. Sure, over the course of many weeks and months these things will almost certainly even out, but it’s also entirely possible that we’ll have another Q word tomorrow.
I’ll definitely be hoping that isn’t the case, because this game was not very kind to me. Proof of that comes from the fact that I scored a five despite a skill score of 98/99, and against an average of 3.8.
Could I have done anything different? Well, I could have had a bit more luck of course, but that aside not a lot. My opening CAGEY left 262 words, but TRAIN was a great second guess and gave me the AI bit in the middle that I was hoping for.
That left only four answers: AVAIL, QUAIL, PLAID and FLAIL and I suppose what I could have done next was to play a narrowing-down word and guarantee a four.
But then again I knew the answer would not be PLAID – because that was the solution only a few days ago, so really I had a three-way choice here. Throwing away the chance of a three for a definite four was a slight gamble, but there was a very good chance I’d end up with a four anyway. Surely I’d have to be unlucky to guess incorrectly twice?
But, of course, that’s exactly what happened. Typical.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
