Financier Mark Walter, who is the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is set to buy another Southern California iconic franchise.

Walter will purchase the Los Angeles Lakers from the Buss family in a deal worth $10 billion, according to a report from The Athletic. ESPN initially reported the sale proper.

Though the sale has not yet been finalized, the sale could value the team at upwards of $12 million, which is almost twice as much than the Boston Celtics were valued when they were sold in March.

Walter is chief executive of financial services outfit Guggenheim Partners. He was the head of the group that purchased the Dodgers for $2 billion in 2012.

He led the group that bought the Dodgers in 2012 for $2 billion. The franchise has won two World Series titles since and operated as one of the best organizations in professional sports. Another member of the group who purchased the Dodgers, Magic Johnson, is a Hall of Famer who played for Lakers.

“A few things I can tell you about Mark – he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way,” Johnson wrote on Twitter/X. “AND he will put in the resources needed to win! I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike.”

The Dodgers have won two World Series titles since Walter and his group made the purchase just over a decade ago. The team payroll is exceeded only by the New York Mets, at $323 million against $321 million. The next closes team is the New York Yankees at $293.5 million.
