The Chargers will begin training camp in a little less than a month, which is when positional battles will ensue, as well as players making their case for a spot on the 53-man roster.
There are a handful of players who are considered locks to make the roster, and some others who aren’t in that category but could make some noise this summer to garner serious consideration for a spot.
Here is a look at three underdogs who could make the cut.
RB Raheim Sanders
The Chargers will most likely roster running backs, just like they did last season. Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton are locks. Kimani Vidal was selected in the draft last year. While he had limited touches in his rookie season, Vidal did show flashes of talent. Sanders will have to beat out Hassan Haskins, who was a core special-teams player last season. But the former South Carolina product brings more talent out of the backfield, which could be enough to warrant a spot.
CB Jordan Oladokun
The Chargers have a ton of bodies in the cornerback room fighting for a spot, and Oladokun should firmly be in the mix. Despite going undrafted, Oladokun brings plenty of production with him, amassing 14 passes defended and nine interceptions at Bowling Green. He possesses a mature skill set, with strong instincts and ball skills, having recorded multiple pick-sixes during his college career.
TE/FB Stevo Klotz
Jim Harbaugh has praised Klotz before. It was just recently when tight end coach Andy Bischoff had strong words for the former Iowa State product, highlighting Klotz’s versatility, stating he can play “Y, F, or fullback” and possesses “tremendous special teams value.” Tucker Fisk is the leader for the fourth tight end spot right now, given his experience. But don’t be surprised if Klotz pushes him for the job.
