Anna Wintour to step down as Vogue US editorial head


Condé Nast announced on Thursday it is searching for a new editorial chief at Vogue U.S., a role previously held by the fashion publication’s long-standing editor, Anna Wintour.

The company, alongside Wintour, is on the hunt for a new head of editorial content, a role which helms the daily operations of the American edition of Vogue, according to a memo sent to staff.

The new hire will report to Wintour, who will continue to oversee the American edition of the fashion bible as global editorial director of Vogue, as well as chief content officer at publisher Condé Nast, where she oversees Wired, Vanity Fair, GQ, AD, Condé Nast Traveler, Glamour, Bon Appetit, Tatler, World of Interiors, Allure and other titles in the publisher’s fold.

The new head of editorial content role at Vogue U.S. will join the heads of editorial content for Japan, China, India, Taiwan, U.K., France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the Middle East.

The fashion matriarch was appointed Vogue U.S. editor-in-chief in 1988, after having served in the top spot at British Vogue.

The search for her Vogue deputy is the latest move in parent Condé Nast’s reorganization across its editorial structure.

In 2021, Condé Nast revealed changes across its editorial structure, with each Vogue edition appointing a head of editorial content sitting under Wintour, expanding the editor’s role, and fashion jurisdiction globally. Aged 75, the hiring of a new U.S. editor is the first signs a succession plan is being put in place for the fashion matriarch.
