49ers WR Jauan Jennings has contract situation worth keeping an eye on

The San Francisco 49ers spent the offseason ensuring they’re in a healthy place with their remaining contracts.

While they worked out extensions with most of their top players, they’re not in the clear on tough contractual decisions following the 2025 season.

The Athletic highlighted one contract worth watching for each team this season. 49ers insider Vic Tafur pointed to breakout star wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who is entering the final year of a two-year extension he signed last offseason. Jennings was the team’s No. 1 wide receiver last season and finished with a career-best 975 receiving yards in an elevated role. Without an extension hammered out, Jennings is due to hit free agency next offseason.

Via the Athletic:

Jennings, a seventh-round pick out of Tennessee in 2020, is entering the final season of a two-year, $15.4 million contract extension, and he had to notice the 49ers securing the futures of Brock Purdy, George Kittle and Fred Warner this offseason. Not that Jennings is on that level, but offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said last month that Jennings sees himself as a No. 1 receiver “and that’s why we love Jauan.”

There’s a strong chance Jennings replicates last year’s production. Going into training camp the club has a slew of question marks at wide receiver. Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from a knee injury he sustained last season. Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing are both unknowns as they enter their second seasons, rookie Jordan Watkins is an even bigger unknown, and veteran Demarcus Robinson is best suited as a tertiary option.

Jennings should be in line to be the team’s No. 1 WR for much of, if not all of, the 2025 season. Should he settle into that role and produce again, it’s easy to see him exiting on a sizable deal in the offseason. The 49ers should be working to try and get him on an affordable extension, but it would make sense if Jennings wants to explore avenues where he’s not potentially competing for targets with two former first-round picks.
