Superman (2025) marks DC Studios’ first feature film to hit theaters. Gunn, who wrote the screenplay and directed the film, became co-CEO of the newly formed DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in 2022, replacing the struggling DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
The movie isn’t an origin story re-telling the superhero’s arrival on Earth. Instead, it focuses on Superman as an established hero with existing relationships with Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. David Corenswet portrays Clark Kent (aka Superman), alongside Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced.
“When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, his actions are questioned, giving tech billionaire Lex Luthor the opportunity to get the Man of Steel out of the way for good,” the synopsis reads. “Will intrepid reporter Lois Lane and Superman’s four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help him before it’s too late?”
Superman is off to a great start at the box office. The movie is estimated to bring in between $115 and $150 million during its opening weekend, according to Deadline. The film also had the best Thursday previews year-to-date at $22.5 million, which is ahead of Matt Reeves’ The Batman ($21.6 million in previews) and the blockbuster hit Barbie ($22.3 million).

The film has also garnered significant critical praise, with an 82% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 340 reviews and an even higher 94% audience score based on over 5,000 verified ratings. This makes Superman the best-reviewed DC film since 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
In his review for The Wrap, film critic William Bibbiani wrote, “James Gunn tried to make a great Superman movie, one that embraces the wonder of the character as an action hero and a moral paragon, which derives its drama from how people react to his faith in us. He succeeded.”

When Will Superman Be Streaming On HBO Max?
Superman is a DC Studios production, which means the superhero film will eventually be available to stream on HBO Max. Warner Bros. Pictures typically adds its theatrical releases to the platform between 60 and 100 days after their debut in theaters, so you can expect the film to arrive sometime in September or October 2025.
For comparison, A Minecraft Movie premiered in theaters on April 4, 2025, and landed on Max 77 days later, on June 20. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire began streaming on Max 97 days after its theatrical release. The movie musical Wonka had a shorter window, arriving on Max 84 days after its debut. DC’s flop Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom had the quickest turnaround, hitting the platform just 67 days after its December 2023 release.
When Will Superman Be Streaming On Digital?
A few months before Superman arrives on HBO Max, the DC Studios film will be available to buy or rent on digital VOD platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home.
Studios typically wait a minimum of 45 days after a film’s theatrical release before making it available digitally, though the exact timing also depends on box office performance. So, if Superman continues to perform well in theaters, it may take longer for the movie to arrive on VOD.
