Kendrick Lamar Stopped From Returning To No. 1 By One Of Today’s Biggest Pop Stars

Kendrick Lamar became a rap superstar with his sophomore full-length Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, but it was that project’s follow-up that turned him into a global powerhouse and launched him into the stratosphere. To Pimp a Butterfly remains one of the most critically-applauded hip-hop full-lengths of all time — and one of the most enduring statements made by a musician in the past several decades.

The collection recently turned 10 years old, and as it celebrates that milestone, the project has returned to multiple Billboard rankings, becoming a bestselling title once again.

To Pimp a Butterfly Reappears on Five Billboard Charts

To Pimp a Butterfly appears on five Billboard albums rankings in the U.S. this week, reentering all of them after previously not finding space on a single list. The exciting resurgence is thanks to a tenth anniversary vinyl reissue. The project has been selling fairly well ever since it dropped in 2015, but the special new release proved to be cause for celebration among Lamar’s fans, who purchased the title in large quantities and made it a chart win once more.

Kendrick Lamar Almost Returns to No. 1

Lamar nearly returns to the top spot on the Vinyl Albums chart with To Pimp a Butterfly, but the collection reappears in the runner-up space instead. The rapper comes in behind only Something Beautiful by Miley Cyrus, which launches at No. 1. That pop full-length only manages to dominate a single Billboard ranking this time around in its first frame on the tallies.

To Pimp a Butterfly Reenters the Top 10

To Pimp a Butterfly also reenters the top 10 on both the Top Album Sales and Top Rap Albums charts, coming in at Nos. 5 and 8, respectively. Luminate reports that Lamar’s masterpiece sold 11,100 copies in the past tracking period — an increase of almost 650% from the previous period, when it sold just 1,500 copies across all formats in the U.S.

Kendrick Lamar Returns to the Billboard 200

The same genre-bending release also breaks back onto both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the Billboard 200, though it doesn’t manage to reach the loftiest tier on either tally. In the past, To Pimp a Butterfly has conquered all five Billboard rankings on which it currently appears, and it has already spent months, if not years, on each and every list.
