What to watch this weekend.
Last week, I posted this guide on Friday the 13th. I was worried about dark omens and ill tidings and all manner of bad luck. But hey, nothing bad has happened anywhere since so I think we dodged a bullet. The world isn’t ending! WWIII isn’t about to go down. Nothing to see here folks. Move along.
It’s officially the first day of summer which just so happens to correspond with my birthday, so I’m definitely planning on watching a good movie tonight. I’m debating between Mad Max: Fury Road, Children Of Men or . . . something else. I can’t quite tell what I’m in the mood for, but I get to pick the movie since it’s my birthday. Look at me, a guy who writes “what to watch” guides who can’t make up his mind about what to watch! Useless!
In any case, there’s not a ton of new stuff out this weekend, though if you’re interested in heading to the movies I have a couple good options for you along with the streaming picks. Read on to find out!
If you have any tips or I missed something, shoot me a message on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. You can check out last weekend’s streaming guide right here.
What’s New & Notable This Weekend
The Waterfront (Netflix)
Netflix’s new crime drama is about the Buckley family, a South Carolina fishing dynasty that happens to also be mixed up in some illicit activities. It stars Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), Jake Weary (Animal Kingdom), Maria Bello (A History Of Violence) and Holt McCallany and was created by Dawson’s Creek and Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson. So far it’s getting mixed but mostly positive reviews that basically amount to “Nothing spectacular but highly entertaining.” A perfect summer watch, basically.
The Gilded Age — Season 3 (HBO Max)
The Gilded Age returns for its third season on HBO this Sunday. The story takes place in the booming 1880s in New York City. If you recently watched the third season of The White Lotus you’ll recognize Carrie Coon, who stars along with Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski. I’ve still never watched this, but the costumes alone make it look well worth your time.
The Buccaneers — Season 2 (Apple TV+)
Travel back one decade from The Gilded Age and sprinkle in some Bridgerton vibes and you get The Buccaneers, Apple TV’s corset-drama about American girls in London and the drama, love, sex and stylish gowns that entails. Season 2’s first episode is out now.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Prime Video)
The Sonic movies are a lot of fun, especially if you’re a gamer, and make for a fun family watch. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is now free to watch with your Prime membership, so be sure to check that out.
The Minecraft Movie (HBO Max)
Speaking of family movies, The Minecraft Movie is up on HBO Max this weekend. I thought this looked terrible when I watched the trailer, but it made a ton of money and kids seem to love it, so if you missed it at the theaters, join Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge and the rest of the zany cast for some fun — if very silly looking — family fun.
28 Years Later (In Theaters)
It’s been 23 years since 28 Days Later blasted onto the scene. What a terrific zombie movie that was! The zombie genre has been a bit oversaturated in recent years largely thanks to the neverending presence of the increasingly mediocre The Walking Dead, but Alex Garland’s 28 Years Later looks absolutely brilliant. I’m glad they didn’t actually wait 28 years to release it!
Elio (In Theaters)
The third family entry in this guide (we don’t usually have this many!) is Pixar’s Elio, which is about a young boy named Elio who is beamed up to the Communiverse where he’s mistaken as Earth’s ambassador to the galaxy. If you enjoy colorful kids movies about aliens, this one has a pretty decent 87% Rotten Tomatoes score.
What’s Streaming Weekly
There are still a number of shows airing weekly, even though most of the heavy hitters like The Last Of Us, Andor, The White Lotus, Severance and so forth are all done for now. It’s been a great year for TV!
Resident Alien — Season 4 (SyFy)
Alan Tudyk’s hilarious alien comedy airs on SyFy before coming to Peacock a week later. I’ve been waiting for a few of these to come out so I could binge it, but if you haven’t watched this wonderful series yet, you can start on Season 1 which is on Netflix and by the time you get through the first three seasons, maybe all the Season 4 episodes will already be out. Tudyk really knocks it out of the park.
Stick (Apple TV+)
I finally watched the first episode of Owen Wilson’s new golf dramedy Stick and thought it was very charming. It’s an easygoing show about a burnt out ex-pro golfer who finds a second chance in the form of a young golf prodigy. Wilson is, well, Wilson and that’s fine. It’s very watchable, if not quite as unique as Shrinking or Ted Lasso, two other shows in the same broad category of feel-good funny.
Duster (HBO)
My weekly guilty pleasure remains Duster which is all muscle cars, shootouts and wonderful 70s attire. Josh Holloway is at his best since Lost and I love that the whole thing is set in my home state of Arizona, back when bellbottoms were all the rage. It’s not perfect, but it’s just so much fun.
Murderbot (Apple TV+)
Actually, that last sentence perfectly describes Alexander Skarsgard’s Murderbot based on the novels by Martha Wells. It’s funny, highly watchable and sometimes just a little cringe. Skarsgard is brilliant, however, and I think it’s a good first season and hope we get more. I just don’t like the weekly release schedule for such short episodes. Read my review here.
The Walking Dead: Dead City — Season 2 (AMC+)
The final episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City airs this Sunday and I’m frankly ready for it to be over. Last week’s episode was better than it’s been maybe all season, but I’m so past caring about any of these characters that I just struggle to watch it, and I’ve been struggling even more to write about it — my apologies. I’ll review the finale, don’t worry.
Other current shows include the 1980s crime drama BMF on Starz which is in its fourth season; Season 2 of Peacock’s “how-done-it” mystery series Poke Face and the comedic BritBox mystery Death Valley.
