Ranking the quarterbacks across the NFL is always a popular offseason debate because it brings on arguments of people standing up for their favorite team’s signal caller.
As for who the best quarterback in the NFL is, well there hasn’t been much of a debate in recent years. With the success of the Kansas City Chiefs under head coach Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes has been undeniable as the league’s top dog. But, that has changed over the last year.
It’s not like Mahomes has fallen off a cliff, but his performance over the last couple years hasn’t been up to par with the electric start to his NFL career. And so, guys like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow have caught up to him in terms of individual performance, and they have probably surpassed him at this point.
Allen makes the best argument for the new ringleader among NFL QBs. He hasn’t gotten past Mahomes’ Chiefs in the postseason yet (0-4 in his career), but his individual play has surpassed Mahomes.
Allen took home the league’s MVP in 2024 after leading the Buffalo Bills to a 13-4 record in a season which many thought they would be going through a slight rebuild. Instead, he led the team to the AFC title game after posting his fifth-straight 40-touchdown season (no NFL QB has accomplished this feat in more than three straight seasons).
For a few years, the only knock on Allen was that he committed too many turnovers. Not only did he clean that up in 2024 (only six on the year), but he kept his high-level of playmaking and still made everyone around him better.
This is why declaring Allen as the NFL’s best QB is picking up steam. Pro Football Focus’ Sam Monson is the latest to say Allen is the best in the land right now, saying, “I think Allen’s the guy right now.”
